Is to keep semi truck drivers from falling asleep and killing themselves and others on the road.

This week a t 4:30 am a local woman died when the oncoming semi truck drifted into her lane. I have little doubt the truck driver fell asleep. Self driving technology has the ability to prevent these accidents by;

- Detecting a driver that is asleep
- M itigating the risk by braking and steering

Do a search on t ruck drivers fall asleep and you will find 10.6 million citations. If the NHTSA’s job is to prevent accidents, this is something they could implement now.

Here’s a video of one such accident . What are we waiting for?

It is definitely something that would help a lot but it would be very complicated to do, mostly because the tech around here actually isn’t great.

On a somewhat related note, a terrorist in Germany a year or so ago rented a truck and drove it into a crowd of civilians at a Christmas market.  When sensors on the truck recorded the impacts, but didn’t register any braking, the truck automatically applied the brakes, dramatically limiting the carnage.

At bear lake there have been 2 overturned trucks in town in a year from “bad brakes” but most are saying fatigue. One took out a building right next to where a ton of people would normally congregate the other took out some storage behind the building the first one too out in a residential area.

I notice it most in the winter months where any trip to the median  or off the shoulder is left in the snow for months. You see the tracks an realize that a heck of a lot of truck drivers are falling asleep.

The government makes noises about preventing deaths due to children being left in hot cars. There is a lot more deaths that can be prevented if we do something about nodding off truckers.

Ask Tracy Morgan.....
